Mellor B vs Cheadle Hulme
1st
Doona's Debut Delight
Cheadle Hulme travelled to Dog Toffee Park in Marple
Bridge on Saturday to take on Mellor in their quest to gain promotion.
Fielding an eighteen man squad Cheadle Hulme quickly slipped into
gear and dominated the opening exchanges with top scorer Ben Ransome
getting a hatrick within the first ten minutes. After scoring the
difficult chances in style Ransome was put clean through on goal
by a neat feed from Neil Peacock and tried to make sure by running
forward until almost in the crease before shooting. The healthy
crowd of spectators, moles and passing dogs could not believe it
when 'Rancid' managed to completely miss the goal from such close
range to add to his growing list of comedy misses. Tim 'Marlon'
Sayers, feeling at home in the countryside, notched Hulme's other
goal in the quarter before some stick chasing allowed Mellor to
pull back two goals.
In the second period the visitors continued to dominate possession
but failed to really turn enough opportunities into goals through
a combination of more comedy finishing and some inspired goalkeeping
from Mellor's No.1. Gary Thompson got another one of his now regular
behind the back goals and nearly fluked another when a hit from
a Mellor defender span him around nearly a full 360 degrees with
the ball flying out of the top his stick. Tomo was not the only
one to take a hit from the home defence as Chris Doona, only just
turned sixteen and making his senior debut, was given a baptism
of fire as he was repeatedly given a working over by the home defence.
In a gentle game played in good spirits Doona must have wondered
what was going on as he was given a real welcome to senior lacrosse.
However he shrugged it of to assist fellow youngster Jamie Tomlinson
as Hulme forged a 7-3 half time lead.
The energy of Cheadle Hulme's large squad meant the third period
was completely dominated by the visitors as Mellor failed to score
and it was only a question of how many the men in black would get.
With their goalkeeper in outstanding form Mellor did not need to
worry as Hulme's best chances kept falling to Timmy 'Marlon' Sayers
who's bandana seemed to slip over his eyes so he couldn't see the
goal. Time after time Sayers ballooned his shots miles over the
goal from a matter of yards out. One particularly wild effort had
a family of moles scurrying for cover on the neighbouring field.
Luckily Cheadle Hulme still have 'Tomo' Thompson in attack and the
veteran scored two goals, the first one being a floater that sailed
over the bemused keeper's head and was a real crowd pleaser.
The final quarter became even more sedate as Hulme rested their
key players and left on Pollock and Jones. Taffy Jones however went
in search of his first goal of the season and despite suffering
a nosebleed and feeling very dizzy managed to get in range of the
opposition goal. Just when glory seemed to be his, Taffy dropped
the ball as he was about to shoot and the moment had passed for
another year. Ross White and Jamie Tomlinson showed him how it's
done with two goals each before Timothy Sayers, headscarf now out
of his eyes, managed to chip in with two late goals to give Cheadle
Hulme a 16-3 win.
Scorers: Jamie Tomlinson 3 Gary Thompson 3, Tim Sayers 3, Ben Ransome
3, Ross White 2, Neil Peacock 1 and Marcus Bartram 1.

Stopfordians vs Cheadle
Hulme 1st
Old School tie no match
for the men in black.
Cheadle Hulme travelled up to the mist covered hills
above Disley on Saturday to take on Stopfordians in an eagerly anticipated
clash at the top of the table. Cheadle Hulme looked the more determined
and better prepared side from the first whistle and this was evident
as Stops appeared to see Hulme's shortest player as no real threat.
Exploiting the malaise in the home defence Neil Peacock twisted,
turned and faked his way through Stops back line three times in
the first ten minutes to put the the home side on the back foot.
The early lead and the importance of the match caused some of the
Cheadle Hulme side to get a little giddy and chase instant glory.
Several audacious shots and drives through the middle of the packed
defence were easily picked off by the home side who were then able
to get a foothold in the match and pull two back before the first
break.
Hulme regrouped at the interval and got back to a more measured
approach penning the home side in with sustained but threatening
attacks as the visitors dominated possession. Hulme's stranglehold
owed much to Kevin Ruddock having an outstanding game at face off
completely taking his opponent to the cleaners all match with Tim
Sayers and Steve Bateman mopping up from the wings. After a long
scoreless period Peacock turned provider for Ben Ransome to extend
the visitors lead. Gary 'Tomo' Thompson always enjoys the big matches
and with his face glowing bright pink from all the running steamed
in for two great goals, the first of which came from a back handed
shot on the crease facing away from goal, a true 'old school' goal
against the old school team. At the other end Cheadle Hulme's defence
had the upper hand with Will Smith making some good saves on the
few occasions the old boys threatened. A neat finish from Marcus
Bartrum game Cheadle Hulme a commanding 7-2 lead at half time.
In the all important third quarter the energy and intensity of
the visitors play put Stops under constant pressure. That pressure
told on their keeper who was dispossessed by young Dave Ashworth.
After watching Ban Ransome atrocious miss in front of an open goal
the previous week the sixteen year old was obviously keen not to
look as foolish as his skipper so made absolutely sure by running
in and very deliberately lining up the shot. Thankfully no one can
look as foolish as 'Rancid' on a lacrosse field and the shot slithered
in. Tim Sayers hard work was rewarded with a well taken goal before
Ransome mid air and about to fall flat on his face took a Peacock
feed and shot all in one motion to score a remarkable goal. This
obviously broke Stopfordian spirits and after having to defend and
work back for long periods the ageing home side ran out of steam
which the men in black exploited to the full.
In the final period the men in black charged forward behind the
leader of men, and young boys, Ben 'Rancid' Ransome who notched
three fine goals to make it twenty four goals in March alone. At
the back Hulme continued to dominate and due to some desperate and
frankly grubby attempts to manipulate the result by the home referee,
Hulme often found themselves in man down situations but it made
no difference as they twice kept Stops out when down to a four man
zone with Gareth 'Taffy' Jones doing a great job on Stops main feeder.
Having dispossessed his man again Taffy was looking to pick up the
loose ball and go on his own glory run down field but was sadly
hit by the same sniper in the bushes that had got the Silent Assassin
earlier in the season and fell head first into the mud. After Dave
Ashworth had grabbed another goal Stopfordians notched three late
goals when the game was over as a contest to make the scoreline
slightly flattering for them as Cheadle Hulme ran out convincing
14-6 victors in this all important fixture.
Scorers;
Ben Ransome 5, Neil Peacock 3, Gary Thompson 2, Dave Ashworth 2,
Marcus Bartram 1 and Tim Sayers 1.

Cheadle Hulme 1st vs Manchester
Waconians B
Wacs get wacked by the
men in black
Cheadle Hulme entertained bottom of the table Manchester
Waconians on Saturday as they looked to continue their winning run.
The gulf in class between the sides was evident in the first quarter
as the men in black stormed into a seven nil lead. Skipper Ransome
having scored sixteen in the last two games carried on his recent
purple patch by notching five times in the first quarter of an hour.
The odds on the leader of men getting double figures were falling
fast, especially when Hulme's captain disposed the Wacs keeper while
he was attempting a clear. With the visiting defenders scattered
around the sidelines and the keeper stranded yards from his goal
all Ransome had to do was lob the ball into the empty net for his
sixth of the match, but to a chorus of "Muppet!" from
the expectant crowd 'Rancid' managed to miss the empty net by several
yards. Having scored 53 goals this season from a variety of difficult
angles and positions Ransome managed to miss the easiest chance
of the lot by some distance but then that is the enigma that is
Ben Ransome.
The second period was again a procession with Neil Peacock getting
in on the act with two and Dave Ashworth, Gary Thompson and Kevin
Ruddock adding well taken goals. Wacs did rally slightly to notch
three in the quarter but they were largely kept in check by some
good defending with Gay Loonsbury getting in some neat knock downs.
With the result seemingly settled and the wind bitingly cold both
sides seemed to lose interest in the third quarter as things got
a little scrappy as Hulme and Wacs traded three goals apiece. With
Dave Musrie striking a blow for goalkeepers everywhere by getting
two goals while playing in an unfamiliar midfield role, defender
Steve Bateman tried to grab a goal for himself when breaking forward.
Attempting a bounce shot would have been an excellent idea if it
had been aimed just in front of the keeper's feet instead of his
own, but sadly the ball plopped to the ground before being picked
up by a Wacs player who ran down the other end to score instead
and earn Bateman his first FU point of the season.
In the last quarter the Wacs side, mixing youth and experience
ran out of steam as Hulme players looked to fill their boots. None
more so than Chris Peacock who seems to relish the fourth quarter
as for the second week running the midfielder got amongst the goals
in final twenty. Being on the wrong end of a twenty goal beating
on a freezing day must been dispiriting enough for the Wacs players
but watching Peacock score quick stick goals must have made the
visitors feel absolutely suicidal. Thankfully for them and the crowd
after three more Hulme goals the referees called time to give Cheadle
Hulme a comprehensive 20-7 victory ahead of next weeks title clash
against Stopfordians in Disley.
Scorers; Ben Ransome 5, Tim Sayers 3, Neil Peacock 3, Chris Peacock
3, Dave Musrie 2, Gary Thompson 2, Kevin Ruddock 1 and Dave Ashworth
1.

Boardman & Eccles
A vs Cheadle Hulme 1st
Rancid makes Boardman rot
Cheadle Hulme faced a potential banana skin on their
promotion push with a tricky fixture at Boardman & Eccles on
Saturday. This was shown in the early exchanges as the home side's
heavyweight attack caused Hulme a few problems and notched the first
goal. The men in black however have their own battering ram in attack
and it was Tomo Thompson who soon equalised with a strong finish.
Thompson had to be content with best supporting role in attack as
it was Ben 'Rancid' Ransome who was the leading man as Boardman
used increasingly violent methods to contain Hulme's skipper but
to no avail. Ransome has played much of the season from a deeper
midfield role but it is in attack, free of running and ball winning
responsibilities, where he truly shines and this has been apparent
in the last couple of matches. Scoring two and assisting another
Ransome helped his side to a 4-2 quarter time lead.
Again in the second period Ransome was too hot for the home defence
to handle as he contributed two more goals and an assist to mirror
the first period. Although the home side scored twice Hulme were
getting on top in a heated midfield battle with Sayers, Musrie and
Chris Peacock all working hard to establish the upper hand.
With a narrow 7-4 lead going into the all important third quarter
Cheadle Hulme began to get on top of the home side's attack with
Guy Lansbury outstanding in defence and Gaz Jones providing fine
support. With Boardman's main threat nullified it didn't help the
home side that their overweight and very angry feeder kept wasting
possession with ridiculous look away passes that 'largely' ended
up out of bounds. Playing his first game since his recent dispute
with coach Adshead, Will Smith had a fine game in goal for Hulme,
making some timely saves to keep the Salford side at bay. Again
Ransome couldn't be contained and got another two in an outstanding
performance from the leader of men before Neil Peacock chipped in
with a powerful shot to give the visitors a 10-5 lead.
In the final period the Boardman side, which had attempted to bully
Hulme and intimidate the referees all afternoon, completely lost
their discipline and self imploded. Having had many similar self
inflicted melt downs of their own in the past, Cheadle Hulme were
able to maintain focus and discipline and rise above all the nonsense
from the home side. That a player such as Chris Peacock could stay
cool and contribute two fine goals in all the mayhem shows the strides
Hulme are making under coach Adshead. Tomo Thompson also powered
in for a nice goal before star man Ransome got his seventh of the
match to seal an impressive 14-5 win for Cheadle Hulme.
Scorers Ben Ransome 7, Gary Thompson 2, Chris Peacock 2, Neil Peacock
2 and Tim Sayers 1.

Cheadle Hulme 1st vs Poynton
A
Pointless Poynton nearly
end goalless
Cheadle Hulme returned to league action when Poynton
visited the Ladybridge ground on Saturday. With Poynton rooted to
the foot of the table all season, the tone of the game seemed to
be set when Kevin 'Razor' Ruddock was allowed to run through the
centre of the Poynton defence unopposed to take a feed and score
in the first few minutes. With Poynton unable to hold possession
for long, Hulme were camped around the visitors goal for much of
the opening period and were able to add a further six goals.
The second quarter continued much like the last with the men in
black pushing for more and more goals with some of Neil Peacock's
feeding from the front a delight, but some of Tim Sayers shooting
less so. That Cheadle Hulme added four more goals with no reply
came as no real shock, but what did surprise the meagre crowd was
the sight of Ben 'Rancid' Ransome pulling off not one but two take
away checks, the second knocking his opponents stick clean out of
his hands. With a few absentees, Hulme moved their skipper back
to his more familiar role in attack, a position Ransome was clearly
relishing as he registered his third and fourth goals of the match
just before half time.
Hulme continued to keep the pressure on by dominating possession
with Steve 'Mike White' Bateman enjoying his run out as long stick
midi so much he found time to score himself. The men in black carried
on the goalscoring with Gary 'Tomo' Thompson, probably feeling young
and slim amongst some of Poynton defenders, regularly finding the
net. The best of the five Hulme goals of the quarter came when Neil
Peacock unleashed a shot of such awesome power it caused the keeper
and the goal frame itself to collapse backwards in a heap. Poynton
were now getting a bit frustrated at their mauling and on a heavy
pitch, some tasty checks were going in. This weeks amusing act of
violence came when Poynton's youngest player decided to take out
Timmy 'Marlon' Sayers and did it with such force Marlon almost got
knocked all the way back to Emmerdale. Poynton managed a small consolation
when poor marking allowed the crease man to ruin Musrie's chance
of a clean sheet.
Like last week the captain really came alive in the last quarter
and showing the footwork learnt from his ballroom dancing, continually
sidestepped the ageing Poynton defence to score time and time again,
coming from the back of goal to boost his tally for the season.
Ransome in fact 'waltzed' through the Poynton back line for the
first four goals of the quarter to make it a stunning nine for the
match. There was another goal for Thompson before Bateman scored
his second of the match. However the player did not hang around
after the match to celebrate with a beer, he disappeared to paint
his bedroom in pastel shades, his transformation from defender to
midfielder was truly complete. The game ended a convincing 22-1
victory and a sterner test will lie ahead in Salford next week.
Scorers: Ben Ransome 9, Gary Thompson 4, Neil Peacock 4, Steve
Bateman 2, Tim Sayers 1, Chris Peacock 1 and Kevin Ruddock 1.

Cheadle Hulme 1st vs Leeds
(David Beesley Cup Semi Final)
Leeds get their pants pulled
down
Cheadle Hulme entertained Leeds in the semi final
of the David Beasley Cup on Saturday. With the league game in Yorkshire
before Christmas being an easy win for Leeds, the visitors arrived
confident of a repeat with the Leeds keeper even booking his holidays
to leave the finals weekend free. Hulme however were a wounded animal
who had learned from the earlier encounter and running a leaner
and meaner 13 man squad were eager to set the record straight.
The first quarter was tense with both sides fighting hard for territorial
advantage. Eventually Leeds broke the deadlock, but by now Leeds
must have known the men in black were a totally different proposition
on their own ground. Hulme got back on terms when a man up situation
was worked to Marcus Bartram who fired in.
The second period was just as finely balanced, with Leeds creeping
3-2 in front before Cheadle Hulme equalised just before the break
through Gary Thompson. Both keepers ensured the scores were low
with Dave Musrie having an outstanding game in the home goal making
some fine saves and completely nullified the threat of the visitor's
American. On the one occasion when Musrie went AWOL, Steve Pollock
made a fine emergency keeper to show the determination of the Cheadle
Hulme side. By this point the American was getting severely frustrated
and completely lost it when Bartram dispossessed him with ease and
lashed out at the Hulme midfielder. Hulme's togetherness was shown
when several players waded in to support their team-mate. As the
fuming yank charged towards Cheadle Hulme's oldest defender Gaz
'Taffy' Jones, Bartram pulled down the pants of the Leeds player.
In a complete rage the American continued to stumble angrily forward,
one hand desperately trying to pull his shorts up to avoid tripping
up and falling flat on his face with the other hand wildly lashing
out his stick at the Welshman. Violence and comedy farce all rolled
into one.
The third quarter carried on much like the last two with both defences
on top with Steve Bateman easily containing Leeds main threat and
Gaz Jones knocking down everything including a few Leeds players
when required. Cheadle Hulme's main threat was coming from their
midfielders Bartram and Neil Peacock, and it was those two who scored
in the third period from powerful shots to the top corner. In support
Kevin Ruddock fought hard at face off and Tim 'Marlon' Sayers ran
tirelessly up and down the field all game.
Tied five all going into the last, this cup semi was on a knife
edge and with both defences and keepers easily on top of the opposition
attacks, a winner was hard to predict. With most of the goals coming
from man ups or fast breaks it seemed it was down to which side
blinked first. Making the least mistakes and giving away fewer penalties
was the key issue and coach Adshead was able to coax the most disciplined
performance out of a Cheadle Hulme side for a few years. With both
sides cancelling one another out Hulme had a secret weapon, captain
courageous himself, Ben Ransome who darted in for not one but two
smartly taken goals to give Hulme a decisive advantage. The game
was not over though as the men in black had to desperately hold
on to possession in the closing minutes to bravely close out the
match and set up a cup final with Stopfordians on the 10th April
with a thrilling 7-5 victory.
Scorers: Marcus Bartram 2, Neil Peacock 2, Ben Ransome 2 and Gary
Thompson 1.

Norbury A vs Cheadle Hulme
1st
Hulme Bury Nor-bury
Cheadle Hulme took a large 19 man squad to Norbury
on Saturday, confident of putting the Hazel Grove side to the sword.
Perhaps they were guilty of being over confident as Norbury took
a surprise lead in the first thirty seconds. For the ten men of
Norbury this was the equivalent of poking a large bear with a stick
as the big black machine soon rolled into action. However Hulme's
first opportunity was wasted when captain Ben Ransome received the
ball free in front of goal. In typically self indulgent style the
skipper decided rather than blast the ball home he would attempt
an aimless over the shoulder effort to earn his first of many FU
points for the afternoon. It took a defender, Mike White, to equalise
before Duncan Woodward scored two to at last come out of his recent
barren spell in front of goal. Typical of the forward's luck at
the moment as soon as he was reaching form, Woodward sustained a
knee injury and missed the rest of the match.
In the second period Hulme completely dominated with Kevin Ruddock
growing into his new role at centre, winning nearly every face and
knocking seven shades out of his opponent on the ones he didn't.
In attack it was the younger figure of Jamie Tomlinson who stood
out with two fine goals as Hulme took an 8-2 lead into half time.
The third quarter completely belonged to the men in black with
seven goals with no reply from the seriously tiring Norbury side.
As usual Thompson and Peacock were to the fore with Tomlinson also
supplying three assists to add to his earlier goals. There was even
time for Adam Cochrane to boot one in, but thankfully the crowd
were spared the Tevez celebration.
In the last quarter it was Hulme's other youngster Dave Ashworth
who took centre stage after being sent on when coach Adshead had
decided skipper Ransome had collected more than enough FU points
for one day. Ashworth showed his captain how it's done with three
well taken goals and two assists in another impressive display.
However just as it seemed the match was petering out Mike 'the snapper'
White decided to liven things up with the kind of display of violence
from the mild mannered long stick midi, which usually seems to coincide
with a full moon. When eventually the match restarted Cheadle Hulme
continued to build up their goal difference through five unanswered
goals with defender Bateman completing the scoring to give the visitors
a 20-2 victory ahead of next week's cup semi final.
Scorers; Neil Peacock 4, Dave Ashworth 3, Gary Thompson 3, Ben
Ransome 2, Duncan Woodward 2, Jamie Tomlinson 2, Adam Cochrane 1,
Marcus Bartram 1, Mike White 1 and Steve Bateman 1.

Brooklands Ex A vs Cheadle
Hulme 1st
Hulme enjoy 'TRIP' to Brooklands
Cheadle Hulme travelled to Brooklands on Saturday
looking to bounce back from the previous week's defeat.
The match started slowly with Hulme enjoying the bulk
of possession but often trying to force the issue too soon and making
few opportunities. Hulmeians as usual were very patient in possession
but carried little goal threat. Therefore it was only 2-1 to the
visitors at quarter time with goals from Neil Peacock and Gary Thompson.
In the second period the men in black continued to
dominate possession with Kevin Ruddock having an outstanding game
at centre and continually broke up Hulmeian's attacks early with
Mike White also on top form. In attack Hulme continued to waste
possession in a fairly turgid period of play. Creatively the player
that stood out was Neil Peacock who scored the visitors only goals
of the quarter. Brooklands couldn't manage to score in the second
period largely down to Pat Moore being in a particularly aggressive
mood, probably because he got too much salt on his pre match fish
and chips.
The third quarter started much the same with Ruddock
and Moore chopping a few in half. Dave Musrie had an outstanding
game in goal, saving on the occasions when Brooklands got through.
In attack Hulme moved the ball too ponderously and were far to eager
to make feeds to the crease which were just not on. However, they
grabbed goals from Ransome, a fourth for Peacock and then a fine
jumping quick stick goal from Duncan Woodward. Brooklands up to
this point had carried no goal threat and there appeared no danger
when a home player went on an ambling run around goal. This changed
when the silent assassin appeared to be mysteriously assassinated
by an unseen sniper in the bushes and went down like a sack of spuds.
The Brooklands player then took advantage and scored with the weakest
of shots as Musrie was obviously too busy laughing to save it.
Hulme's attackers were given a good talking to by
coach Adshead at the break and really stepped it up in the last
period rattling in five with no reply. Ross White scoring two neat
goals on an accomplished return to the team and Jamie Tomlinson
supplying two assists in an excellent performance from the youngster.
Skipper Ben Ransome, obsessed as ever with his personal points tally
managed to score twice to offset the eleven FU points he had collected
throughout the game. Gary Thompson completed the scoring to give
Cheadle Hulme a 12-2 victory.
Scorers; Neil Peacock 4, Ben Ransome 3, Gary Thompson
2, Ross White 2, Duncan Woodward 1.

Cheadle Hulme 1st vs Liverpool
Liverpool 'steal' points
with last minute winner
Cheadle Hulme returned to League action on Saturday when they entertained
Liverpool.
With the first encounter being a draw and both sides pushing for
promotion the first quarter was understandably a little tense with
neither side able to get on top. The visitors opened the scoring
but Hulme levelled before the first break when Ben Ransome scored
after a sublime fake and feed from Neil Peacock.
Liverpool retook the lead early in the second quarter only to let
Hulme back level with a wild own goal when a Liverpool defender
flicked the ball past his own keeper from a good distance and quite
tight angle for a neat finish. That was as good as it got for the
home side in the second period as they only had a Ransome goal in
response to a further three from Liverpool to make it 5-3 at half
time.
In the third period Hulme became ragged as their play lost all
shape and cohesion, they also struggled to match the speed and energy
of the younger students and conceded four goals in the quarter with
skipper Ransome again the only player in a black shirt to score.
For all their slack play in the middle quarters the men in black
did manage to carve out the greater number of opportunities but
several players were guilty of missing easy chances as the visiting
keeper was made to look like a world beater. Cheadle Hulme's better
players however were at the back with Guy Landsbury making a welcome
return, Steve Bateman again performing well and Steve Pollock making
a few surging runs out of defence.
With a 9-4 deficit going into the last quarter coach Adshead gave
his troops a talking to but there had been little in the game to
suggest what was about to happen. When the chips are down for Cheadle
Hulme and things are going wrong, one man's determination shines
through. Picking up the ball and bull dodging through two challenges
Gary 'Tommo' Thompson bore down on goal but as the slides came in
he seemed to be pushed away from goal and the opportunity seemed
to be lost. Facing away from goal and off balance Tommo launched
an amazing overhead shot which flew perfectly into the top corner
leaving the Liverpool keeper for once motionless. Hulme were now
back in business with Neil Peacock blasting one in before Duncan
Woodward finished off two well worked moves to put the heat on a
shocked Liverpool. The game suddenly became very tense and when
Peacock grabbed another the scores were level. When Hulme kept the
visitors out when down to a four man zone through more great defending
the men in black thought it was their day. It seemed certain when
Woodward received the ball in front of goal in the last minute with
only the keeper to beat but his shot went straight into the keepers
stick. Captain Ransome then decided to foul the keeper leaving Liverpool
in possession, Hulme a man down and 30 seconds on the clock. The
match ended in heartbreak as Liverpool scored in the last few seconds
to give them a 10-9 victory.
Scorers; Ben Ransome 3, Neil Peacock 2, Duncan Woodward 2, Gary
Thompson 1 and one own goal.

Boardman & Eccles
A vs Cheadle Hulme 1st
David Beesley Cup - Round
2
Barts Beats Boardman in
Beesley Bonanza
When then ice age finally ended, strange neanderthal
men roamed the earth carrying sticks as weapons and unable to communicate
in anything other than grunts. This was not dissimilar to the scene
that greeted the lacrosse players of Cheadle Hulme when they met
up in Salford for their first game after the big freeze.
A trip to Boardman & Eccles is never easy and without seeing
action for over a month and lacking an established face off specialist
in the squad the men in black faced a tricky David Beasley cup quarter
final on Saturday.
Hulme started the game looking decidedly ring rusty and with little
success at the face offs and an inability to hold the ball in attack
on the few occasions they managed to clear the ball, Hulme were
defending for much of the opening period. Boardman took advantage
with three goals without reply but gave the impression that they
couldn't go up another gear.
After a few adjustments from coach Adshead, Hulme increased the
tempo and completely turned the tie around with six unanswered goals
in the second quarter. Marcus 'Barts' Bartram latched onto a Steve
Fish feed for the first before Chris Wilson rattled in a fine second.
Duncan Woodward evaded some close marking for the third as Hulme
drew level. Hulme were now getting on top in the midfield areas
with Kevin 'Razor' Ruddock showing particular tenacity. Hulme forged
ahead with further goals from Ransome and Bartram. The quarter ended
when Tim Sayers, wearing his new 'mystic meg' headscarf, somehow
knew exactly where Ransome would feed him the ball before scoring
Hulme's sixth.
Hulme's class continue to tell in the third period with 'Barts'
Bartram scoring with a cracking shot in a great performance from
the midi who also pulled of some excellent wrap checks which took
away both ball and stick. Well as Bartram played it was probably
defender Steve Bateman who was man of the match as the visiting
defence repelled Boardman's best efforts time and time again with
the Silent Assassin also keeping them quiet. Chris Wilson having
possibly his best game of the season scored a rasper before Gary
'Tomo' Thompson gave Hulme a 9-4 lead going into the last.
Cheadle Hulme were guilty of complacency in the final period with
keeper Smith having a 'Taibi moment' with the weakest of shots being
allowed to trickle in. However goals from Sayers and Bartram meant
that Boardman's late rally was in vain as Cheadle Hulme progress
to the semi finals with an 11-8 win.
Scorers Marcus Bartram 4, Tim Sayers 2, Chris Wilson 2, Ben Ransome
1, Duncan Woodward 1 and Gary Thompson 1.

Cheadle U12 vs Oldham
U12s
Squad Members:
Tom Doona, Sam Wilks, Andrew Ashworth, George Mealand, Sam Lowth,
Dylan (Crocky) Brown, Erin Smith, Connor Edmonds, Adam (Foxy) Fox,
Adam Layland, Alex Lowth, Harry Emuss, William Ashworth
After what seemed like an eternity the Lacrosse pitches were alive
again after what was hopefully the last of the bad Winter weather.
The under 12's played host to Oldham in the Plate.
The match started with only 9 players-a-side as Oldham were a player
short, this was soon rectified when there 10th player arrived allowing
both teams to have the correct number of players. CH started impressively
and were soon 1-0 up thanks to an Andrew
Ashworth goal. The passing and movement were both excellent and
3 more goals were scored by Connor, George and Sam. It was looking
more like a cricket score than Lacrosse! Oldham at this stage jumped
into life and became more aggressive, they scored to make the score
4-1. Shortly after Oldham scored there
was a pitch invasion by two dogs - who ran off with the ball. The
ball was quickly retrieved and the dogs were put back on their leads.
The second quarter was very tight, with Oldham scoring the only
goal to make it 4-2 at half-time.
The third quarter was much more open, Connor scored 5-2.
Oldham then scored twice in quick succession to make the score 5-4.
Tom scored 6-4. Oldham scored 2 more
goals to go into the final quarter level at 6-6.
The final quarter was nerve-racking for everybody involved, players,
coaches, parents and dogs. The team responded well to the situation
and played as well as they had done in the first quarter. Andrew
scored 7-6, Tom scored 8-6,
Andrew scored again 9-6. CH seemed
to have the match won, but once again the aggressiveness of Oldham
unsettled CH. Oldham scored to make it 9-7.
At the restart Oldham got possession and scored almost immediately
9-8. All present had their hearts in
their mouths as Oldham attacked relentlessly. Finally the Ref blew
his whistle, much to the relief of all present. After bad weather
and the Christmas lay-off, this was an excellent result and all
players should be proud of their performances.

Cheadle Hulme 1st vs Boardman
& Eccles A
Big Willy misses clean
sheet
Despite two weeks of rain, Cheadle Hulme's match with
Boardman & Eccles went ahead on Saturday at the Ladybridge ground.
Cheadle Hulme fielded their now traditional big squad while some
of the Boardman squad were just big.
Given the conditions it was never going to be a free flowing classic,
but thankfully Hulme adapted better and created most of the early
opportunities with Duncan Woodward missing the best of them. After
ten minutes Woodward made amends by opening the scoring with a neat
close finish from a Gary Thompson assist. Boardman were having little
joy at the other end and it was no surprise when a neat dodge and
feed by Neil Peacock set up skipper Ransome to make it two nil.
The second quarter carried on much as the first with Hulme gaining
the majority of possession thanks to Chris Peacock, Dave Musrie
and Kevin Ruddock working hard on the muddy pitch and Mike White
breaking up Boardman moves early. Things livened up when Neil Peacock
received a slash down his back while attempting to clear the ball
out of defence. There followed a 'frank and honest discussion' between
Hulme's smallest player and a very chunky Boardman player. With
the other Peacock brother later having his own tantrum Hulme were
thankful that Tim Sayers was away on holiday! Spurred on by his
near death experience Neil Peacock had an outstanding game in midfield
and set up both of the goals in the second period, firstly for Woodward
and then for 'Rancid' Ransome. By half time Boardman still had not
scored thanks to some fine saves by 'Big Willy' Smith who had a
great game in the home goal. Hulme's defence were solid as ever
with Pat Moore having his best game of the season and Guy Lansbury
adding authority to the back line.
With the pitch becoming more and more like a swamp and some tasty
checks going in on the ground balls the lacrosse was sometimes not
pretty but the men in black were more effective but missed some
really easy chances to put the game out of reach. The leader of
men did however make up for some lame shooting to score the only
goal of the third quarter.
In the final quarter Hulme needed someone able to cut through the
mud and the large visiting defence and turned to their very own
plough; Gary 'Tomo' Thompson who scored two goals the first coming
from Neil Peacock's forth assist of the match. Late in the match
Boardman were still searching for a goal, but were getting nowhere
against an excellent Cheadle Hulme defence. Steve Bateman was again
rock solid with Gaz 'Taffy' Jones mopping up any danger and Steve
'Silent Assassin' Pollock giving the visiting attack something to
think about on his return to the side. 'Big Willy' Smith came dangerously
close to a clean sheet and having to buy a round at the bar as Boardman
floundered in attack, but poor marking allowed the visitors to get
a consolation goal before Lord Yates called a premature end to the
battle in the mud. With all the teams around them drawing Cheadle
Hulme's 7-1 win leaves them well placed for promotion.
Scorers; Ben Ransome 3, Duncan Woodward 2, Gary Thompson 2.

Cheadle Hulme 1st vs Brooklands
Hulme 'Neil' to Worship
Peacock Performance
Neil Peacock was the man in form as Cheadle Hulme
played host to Brooklands Hulmeians. Initial possession came from
the men in black, and Peacock opened the scoring, finishing an outside
shot after a neat feed from Tim 'Slick' Sayers. Despite a determined
looking Brooklands hitting back, it was again the Tiler from Cheadle
Heath who scored his second of the game to end the Quarter 2-1.
Hulme continued strongly in the 2nd quarter, and this time it was
the ever youthful Gary 'Tomo' Thomson who made the biggest impression.
The midfield and attack worked well together, good signs from 'Coach'
Adshead's on-going work. Firstly, Duncan Woodward converting a Chris
'Peaky' Peacock feed and then Gary Thompson combining with Tim Sayers's
"Big" left hand for another goal. Thompson then scored
2 further goals to cement a strong quarter for Hulme. The team lost
Chris Peacock at half-time due to injury, but at least it lessened
the chances of a Cheadle Hulme send-off for descent, tantrums or
bad language.
Brooklands hit back in the 3rd and used their sweeping run in front
of goal to complete 3 goals as Hulme switched off at the back. Again,
there were times when Hulme failed to finish. Ben Ransome demonstrated
he had not lost the ability to sneak round the back for a one-on-one
with the keeper and place it perfectly up top in the goalies stick.
The home team could, however, take some heart from losing the quarter
by completing an excellent fast break team goal from deep in their
own half. As the final pass went to Steve Fish, the whole team had
a nervous wait to see if the 'Lover from Ljubljana's' terribly strung
stick would fire the ball skywards. Fish made no mistake to complete
the move.
After another inspirational team talk from 'Coach' Adshead, Cheadle
Hulme lifted their game in the final quarter and moved the ball
well in attack. The defence was also bolstered by the return of
Guy 'Lanners' Lansbury. After missing last week, and the third quarter,
he made short work of the continued use of the sweeping runs by
Brooklands' attackers and neutralised the threat. Another notable
performance from Steve Bateman kept a determined Brookland's to
just 2 goals in the quarter.
Up front Neil Peacock again shone with a quick goal from the face,
and the momentum of the match again turned towards the home team.
Ransome pitched in with a further 2 goals to his season tally and
a further goal and assist went the way of Neil Peacock to complete
a 4 goal haul to celebrate his upcoming birthday. Brooklands heads
went down and the game was completed with a top corner close range
finish from Sayers. The game ended 12 - 7 to Cheadle Hulme, with
8 goals coming from direct assists.

Liverpool vs Cheadle Hulme
1st
Ruddock 'Razor' Sharp in
dying minutes earns Hulme a draw
Cheadle Hulme took the short journey down the M56
for a first time encounter with newly promoted Liverpool. Unsurprisingly,
it was the car containing Chris Peacock, David Musrie and driven
by Will Smith that was last to arrive. Seemingly, none of the occupants
could seem to find the massive sports ground and 5 storey cricket
pavilion smack bang on the main road.
Bizarrely, as the 2pm face-time came and went, and as the men in
black were warmed up and ready to go, the pitch was still in use
for a ladies match. Not wanting to seem a complaining team, 'Coach'
Adshead was happy to wait until the 22 lycra short wearing female
Uni students had finished. Last minute recruitment of ref's by Liverpool
delayed the start further and the game finally got underway just
before 2.30pm.
Cheadle Hulme started the more settled and moved into a quick 2-0
advantage with goals from Rick Wilson and Gary 'Tommo' Thompson.
However, a young and physical side, Liverpool charged at Hulme and
moved the ball quickly on the clear, catching the defence out on
more than one occasion to end the Quarter 2-2.
It was end to end stuff in Quarter 2 with the biggest difference
between the teams that Liverpool were taking their opportunities
in front of goal and Cheadle Hulme failed to finish. Ben 'Rancid'
Ransome scored Hulme's only goals of the period, both assisted from
a strong performing Neil Peacock. However, Ransome, like others,
was guilty of missing opportunities, particularly a weak left handed
shot at the keeper that never mind Colin but Chrissy Windeler would
have easily saved. The quarter finished with the visitors 6-4 down
The third quarter continued a very heated and physical affair,
with checks and take-outs in abundance which caused Hulme, not for
the first time to lose their heads. It took a 'timeout' talking
to from 'Coach' Adshead for Cheadle Hulme to focus on Lacrosse as
opposed to the refereeing. Goals from Ransome and a great finish
from another excellent performance by Rick Wilson, couldn't prevent
Liverpool extending their lead to 10-6.
It was all or nothing moving into the last Quarter and 'Coach'
Adshead was determined that the experience of Hulme could lead to
goals, given the correct discipline. Spurred on further by the return
of Dave 'Mus' Musrie, Hulme moved the ball quickly in front of goal
and made the most of their opportunities. The visitors scored a
succession of 4 goals from 4 players with Ransome, Neil Peacock,
Rick and Chris Wilson all getting on the score sheet to tie the
game with a real team effort.
Hulme had done a good job in the second half of locking off the
2 key Liverpool scorers. But in a moment of madness, Pat Moore and
Tim 'Slick' Sayers switched men and allowed Liverpool a free feed
and shot on goal to once again take the lead.
However, the momentum was very much with Hulme and after some frenzied
action in the Liverpool goal area the ball popped out to Kevin 'Razor'
Ruddock who made no mistake of scoring his first goal of the season.
Eventually, after what seemed like some strange decisions to keep
the ball in the Cheadle Hulme end, the whistle blew for a hard fought
point.

Cheadle U12 vs Cheadle
Hulme U12s
Squad Members:
Tom Doona, Sam Wilks, William Ashworth, George Mealand, Sam Lowth,
Dylan (Crocky) Brown, Erin Smith, Connor Edmonds, Dylan Smith, Adam
(Foxy) Fox, Adam Layland, Andrew Ashworth, Alex Lowth
The under 12's Squad met at Cheadle Hulme for the short journey
to local rivals Cheadle, little did we know what a thrilling, hard
fought and entertaining match we were going to watch! After the
face off Cheadle won possession only for the CH defence to win the
ball and pass the ball with some neat and accurate passing through
midfield and quickly into the path of George Mealand who expertly
beat the Cheadle goaly, all within the first minute of play! 1-0,
Andrew Ashworth had an attempt at goal, narrowly going wide, the
Cheadle defence won the ball and passed upfield, after some long
passes a crafty lob managed to beat the CH goaly. 1-1,
Cheadle Hulme had good midfield possesion Connor Edmonds, Erin Smith
and Sam Lowth battling hard in midfield against a sturdy and robust
Cheadle midfield. Cheadle Hulme hit the Cheadle post twice in quick
succesion only for Cheadle to break and have an attempt on goal
which was saved by Adam Layland, after some good defending by Alex
Lowth (making his debut), Adam "Foxy" Fox and Dylan "Crocky"
Brown, CH were unlucky to concede a goal scored by the Cheadle lighthouse,
1-2. After the restart Cheadle broke
and scored 1-3. CH had a few minutes
where they were dominating the field of play, and after some excellent
play the ball was passed to Tom Doona who expertly beat his two
markers and stuck the ball in the goal, 2-3.
Cheadle Hulme again pressurised the Cheadle defence, Sam Wilks shooting
wide after cutting in from the left wing, with time running out
the referee blew the whistle to bring the first quarter to an end,
much to the relief of Cheadle.
The second quarter started as the first had finished, CH pressuring
the Cheadle defence, Andrew Ashworth made a mazy run and scored
to equalise 3-3. After the restart
Cheadle took possesion, despite fearless defending Cheadle scored
3-4. Good defending once again by Alex,
"Foxy" and "Crocky" paved the way for William
Ashworth to get the ball out to Sam Wilks who beat the Cheadle keeper,
to once again level the score 4-4.
Cheadle Hulme dominated the next few minutes and punished the Cheadle
team with goals by Sam Wilks 5-4 and
George Mealand 6-4. After CH's period
of dominance Cheadle score 6-5, more
good teamwork from the CH defence and midfield, George Mealand tucked
the ball past the keeper 7-5. With
the quarter coming to an end Cheadle managed to score 7-6.
All players, coaches and spectators new this game was going to be
tough we were not dissapointed, each team were having periods of
possession, but it was Cheadle who managed to score, level again
7-7. Cheadle were camped in the CH
half trying to break down the defence, who were still battling away,
determined not to concede another goal, Cheadle committed an offside
and duly paid the penalty for being a man down and conceded a goal,
scored by Dylan Smith 8-7. Once again
just before the end of the quarter Cheadle scored to level - once
again! 8-8.
At the face off Cheadle managed to scramble possession, one of the
Cheadle players made an excellent run beating numerous players,
the only problem was he was running towards his own goal! luckilly
for his team he heard the anguished cry of the Cheadle coaching
staff "wrong way" and turned the correct way. After this
light hearted interlude Cheadle Hulme showed how much they wanted
to win this match, Sam narrowly going wide with a shot and Crocky
picking the ball up in his own half and beating half the Cheadle
team before passing to the attackers. Cheadle were determined not
to loose their unbeaten start to the season and threw everything,
incuding the kitchen sink at the CH goal, Adam Layland was equal
to them and made some terrific saves, After consistent CH pressure
Sam Wilks recieved the ball and duly tucked the ball past the Cheadle
keeper 9-8. This was to be the final
score of the match, what a great result! All the squad gave 100%
when on the pitch and can be rightly proud of todays efforts.

Cheadle Hulme U12s vs
Brooklands
Team: Tom Doona, Sam Wilks, William Ashworth, George
Mealand, Dylan Brown, Erin Smith, Connor Edmonds, Dylan Smith, Adam
(Foxy) Fox, Josh Smith, Adam Layland, Harry Emuss. (Unfortunately
the team were without Andrew Ashworth and Sam Lowth, both ill).
The team arrived early at Cheadle Hulme raring to go (just a few
absences due to illness), it was a sunny morning and all were looking
forward to a great game against Brooklands
The game started with face off at just after 10. The game was fast
and furious from the off, with Sam Wilks having a great shot on
goal but saved by the keeper. The ball went straight down to the
other end of the field, a great check from Adam Fox but Brooklands
retained possession and shooting, resulting in a super save by Adam
Layland. Brooklands attacking was relentless and then they scored,
0-1 to Brooklands. The relentless attacking continued with some
great saves by goalkeeper Adam Layland, but the defence and goalie
managed to keep the score at 0-1. A great check by Josh Smith and
a super run up field by Dylan Smith, passing to George Mealand who
scored, 1-1. The fast and relentless attacking continued, applying
pressure on the Cheadle Hulme defence with lots of good checking
and saves but Brooklands scored 3 more goals and at the end of the
first quarter the score was 1-4 to Brooklands.
In the second quarter and straight from the face off, Cheadle Hulme
were an attacking force - William Ashworth's great shot was saved
and Josh Smith caught the goalie's clearance. Then a shot straight
in the back of the net for Josh Smith and the score was now 2-4.
Brooklands again started to apply the pressure and score to make
it 2-5. Adam Fox made a great run up the field and passed to Tom
Doona who passed to George Mealand and scored, making it 3-5. With
lots of pressure from Cheadle Hulme, Josh Smith scored, 4-5. The
pressure was on Brooklands and they had some more shots on goal
but were wide. Some great runs by Connor Edmonds and Josh Smith
were really putting pressure on the Brooklands defence. A substitution
was made, Connor Edmonds off and Dylan Brown on. More great attacking
by Cheadle Hulme forced Brooklands keeper to make some great saves.
Score at half time was 4-5 to Brooklands.
After half time, there were some changes to the Cheadle Hulme team;
the goalie was now Josh Smith (first time in goals), Adam Layland
was feeling unwell and was unable to continue, Erin Smith was off
and Connor Edmonds was on. There was plenty of pressure being applied
by both teams making both defences work really hard. Sam Wilks made
a shot on goal, narrowly missing. The new goalie had to make some
excellent saves as Brooklands again applied the pressure and eventually
found the back of the net twice, 4-7. Erin Smith now back on the
field and Tom Doona off, just in time to see some excellent running
by Dylan Smith and passing to Sam Wilks who scores, 5-7. Brooklands
then found the net twice more to make it 5-9. With plenty of fearless
blocking and checking the CH defence were working really hard. Tom
Doona had just won the battle of a ground ball scramble when the
ref blew for the end of the quarter.
Last quarter as you would expect both teams were full of attacking
spirit, with some great checks from William Ashworth and some great
saves by Josh Smith. Brooklands score to take it to 5-10. Cheadle
Hulme were really working hard, Harry Emuss made an excellent goal
mouth clearance and Adam Foxy Fox was fearless in defence. CH goalie
was making some excellent saves but the Brooklands attacking team
were just too strong and they scored again, 5-11. Coach John Adshead
called a time out. William Ashworth beat the Brooklands player at
face off and made a great run up the field but was dispossessed
by the Brooklands defence. Brooklands scored twice more, 5-13. Dylan
Brown wins face off and makes a great run but again Brooklands defence
is strong, they go on the attack and score again, 5-14. Cheadle
Hulme don't loose heart and carry on playing strongly with a great
check from Dylan Smith and a super pass to George Mealand who was
very unlucky not to score. The final whistle blows and the final
score is 5-14 to Brooklands.

Cheadle Hulme 1st vs Mellor
B
Cheadle Hulme entertained Mellor on Saturday intent
on building on their early season form. Hulme started well enough
and looked completely in control in the first quarter cruising into
a 3-1 lead with goals coming from their main threats, Ransome, Woodward
and Neil Peacock.
However in the second period the men in black appeared to take
their foot off the pedal and after some scrappy play allowed Mellor
to edge back into things with the visitors scoring twice. Hulme's
only reply came from new recruit Adam Cochrane, who scored his first
goal for the club when he powered in a strong finish after nice
work from Dave Ashworth. Without ever looking threatening Mellor
reached half time only 4-3 down, demonstrating a traditional club
trait of being hard to beat.
Cheadle Hulme again fielded a large squad of 18 players and after
years of being desperately short of players the club seems to be
struggling with its new circumstances. Integrating a new coach and
new players as well as two young players is causing a few teething
problems which could be seen clearly in the third quarter as Cheadle
Hulme became totally disjointed in a poor twenty minute spell, where
only Duncan Woodward and Gary Thompson scored for the home side.
The men from the hills capitalised on the malaise to draw level
with three goals. Playing with a large squad means players have
less field time and find it hard to get into the game. Key players
are often found out of their favoured positions and struggle to
develop an understanding with the other attackers, meaning little
free flowing lacrosse. However, Ben Ransome constantly looking to
drive on his man to boost his personal stats tally didn't really
help make the attack play more cohesive. To compound matters Hulme
also lost Guy Lansbury and Steve Fish to knee injuries.
The match to this point was a carbon copy of the previous week,
decent first quarter, awful second and third quarters leaving the
matches tied at six all going into the last.
Thankfully the trend continued as the men in black smashed the
resistance of poor Mellor with three goals in the first few minutes
of the last quarter as Chris Peacock completely dominated at face.
Woodward got on the end of the first two well worked moves and Ross
White capped a good performance with a classy goal. Never shy of
trying an ambitious shot, Timmy Sayers attempted what could only
be described as an under arm roll shot which some how sneaked into
the bottom corner. Gary Thompson got reward for a good performance
with a goal. Ben Ransome desperate for some personal glory chipped
in with a couple and Chris Peacock finished things off with a surprisingly
powerful shot in the top corner. It should not be forgotten that
in this eight goal blitz came three assists from Jamie Tomlinson
who again played with increasing maturity. Mellor trudge back to
the hills with a 14-7 beating and Hulme stay top as one of only
two sides to win all three opening fixtures.
Scorers; Duncan Woodward 5, Ben Ransome 3, Gary Thompson 2, Neil
Peacock 1, Ross White 1, Adam Cochrane 1 and Chris Peacock 1.

Cheadle Hulme U12s vs
Mellor & Sheffield
After meeting at the Clubhouse the Under 12's travelled
to Mellor to play two matches against teams who proved to be very
tough opponents. The squad was Sam Wilks, Dylan Smith, Erin
Smith, Adam Fox, Adam Layland, Tom Doona, Sam Lowth, Dylan Brown,
George Mealand, Josh Smith, Harry Emuss, Andrew Ashworth and Connor
Edmonds.
Mellor v. Sheffield was the first match, Adam Layland played in
goal for Mellor as they did not have a goalkeeper, Sheffield won
this match convincingly.
Cheadle Hulme v. Sheffield
Cheadle Hulme made a good start to the match and after a solo run
Andrew Ashworth's shot put us 1-0 ahead, Sheffield quickly equalised,
Dylan Smith scored 2-1, Sheffield pressurised the Cheadle Hulme
defence, there was some really good checking, defending and saves
by the keeper, but eventually scored 2-2. Two goals to CH scored
by Sam Wilks and Andrew Ashworth put us 4-2 ahead, but with half-time
approaching Sheffield managed to score. Half time score 4-3 to CH.
After half time Sheffield once again had lots of possession, Josh
Smith was unlucky with his shot which was just the wrong side of
the crossbar, Sheffield hit back and levelled the score 4-4, shortly
after Sheffield found the back of the net to take the lead for the
first time 4-5, there was more pressure from Sheffield but CH were
defending really well, more great saves from the goalkeeper and
fearless checking and blocking from the defenders, with seconds
to go Connor Edmonds had a magnificent shot saved by the Sheffield
keeper, the final score was 4-5 to Sheffield. A great performance!
Cheadle Hulme v. Mellor
After some good passing the ball was passed to Sam Wilks who shot
on goal missing narrowly, Tom Doona was unlucky with his shot just
running wide, Mellor passed the ball up field and after some good
play scored 0-1, after the restart the ball found it's way to Sam
Wilks who rounded his marker and shot to equalise 1-1, there was
a period of sustained Mellor pressure where they scored twice 1-2,
1-3. Both Sam and Andrew had good efforts on goal their keeper saving
on both occasions, John Adshead called a time out seconds before
half-time, after deciding which play to make the team returned to
the pitch, they narrowly missed yet again, the whistle then blew
for half-time.
From the start of the second half Connor made a good break, the
Mellor keeper making a good save from point-blank range, Dylan Smith
had another shot saved, but then against the run of play Mellor
broke and scored 1-4, even at 1-4 down the team did not give up
trying,Sam Wilks scored to make it 2-4 and Erin Smith had a good
shot on goal saved, just after Erin's shot Mellor lost a man after
a headcheck, being one man down CH pressurised the Mellor defence,
Sam Wilks once again stepping inside his defender to tuck the ball
in the net. With time running out CH tried in vain to score but
Mellor hung on to win 3-4

Cheadle Hulme 1st vs Stopfordians
The first match of the new season at the Ladybridge
club saw Stopfordians provide the opposition in a key 4th Division
encounter.
During a long association with the club John Adshead has always
described Cheadle Hulme as the uncoachable team a collection
of individuals unwilling and unable to take on any form of advice.
Therefore it was with some surprise that John Adshead accepted the
post of head coach of Cheadle Hulme this summer. After a summer
of intensive coaching and an opening day thumping of Poynton it
was felt maybe just maybe a corner had be turned.
The visit of Stopfordians showed that the corner turned lead into
a very dark dead end visited many, many times before.
Against a side expected to challenge for promotion
Hulme started well enough with goals from Duncan Woodward and Marcus
Bartram. With both sides wasting opportunities and possession Stops
took advantage and pulled one back before the break.
After the restart Hulme went into their old fashioned
brainless mode showing no shape or movement in attack. Only wild
shots and feeds in-between passes to the ground or over peoples
heads. In attack Neil Peacock and Duncan Woodward stood out like
a beacon amongst the mediocrity and it was no surprise when the
latter scored two in the second period. The fact that Stops only
scored two in the same period was largely down to Rick Wilson, standing
in for Will Smith in the home goal, who pulled off outstanding save
after save in a man of the match performance for a player more accustom
to midfield.
The third quarter was even more scrappy with both
sides scoring twice. Hulme's efforts from Ben 'Rancid' Ransome and
a slick left handed finish from Tim Sayers. Even though general
stick handling was weak and each attack more direction less than
the last, the men in black competed hard to hold a narrow lead with
Chris Peacock outstanding at face and Steve Bateman, Gaz 'Taffy'
Jones and Guy Landsbury very assured at the back.
At the start of the last quarter Stops made it 6 all
to set up a tense finale. However after maybe taking on board a
few words of wisdom from their coach, the big black machine of 20
men clicked into gear and made the old boys from Disley look like
old men, with four goals without reply from Neil Peacock, Duncan
Woodward and two from skipper Ben Ransome looking more at home in
an attacking role. The 10-6 win means Chealde Hulme are top on goal
difference.
Scorers: Duncan Woodward 4, Ben Ransome 3, Neil Peacock
1, Marcus Bartram 1 and Timmy Sayers 1.

Poynton A vs Cheadle Hulme
1st
On Saturday Cheadle Hulme made the short trip to Poynton
for the start of the 2009/10 lacrosse season. Since Cheadle Hulme
last won a game of lacrosse back in November 2008 many things have
happened to change the natural order of things. Among them Obama
has become the first black president, Manchester City have some
half decent footballers but most shocking of all Cheadle Hulme have
acquired more than 10 players and a coach!
Obviously in a state of deep shock at facing an 18 man Cheadle
Hulme squad Poynton quickly slipped into a 5-1 quarter time deficit
as the black hoards ran riot. Skipper Ben Ransome carrying on from
last season with two goals, before the home keeper chucked in what
could only be a Chris Peacock cross. Gary Thompson and Tim Sayers
being the other scorers.
Poynton overcame their initial fear of the big black machine to
compete more evenly in the second quarter and with the help of the
home referee pulled off the hidden ball trick in a moment of comedy
for everyone but Hulme's keeper Will Smith. Hulme however edged
the quarter with finishes from Ransome, Thompson and Ross White.
It could have been more but for Timothy 'Slick' Sayers putting on
his show pony display in front of goal.
Ben Ransome obviously angry at having to run about in midfield
to vengeance on Poynton with two quick goals in the third quarter
before Duncan Woodward got the first of five goals on his return
from injury. The moment of the quarter came when 16 year old Jamie
Tomlinson scored on his first team debut to cap an excellent display
in attack. Not to be out done fellow youngster Dave Ashworth made
a very accomplished debut nearly scoring twice and beating ex England
man Dougie Martin at face off.
Hulme ran riot in the final quarter scoring seven goals showing
such dominance that Chris Peacock scored twice without the keeper
throwing them in. Just as things were getting a little prosaic new
boy Steve Fish, who supplied five assists on his return from Slovenia,
made thing a little more lively with some very 'eastern bloc' take
outs and stick throwing. However nothing could detract from a convincing
19-5 win to prove the future is not orange but black.
Scorers Ben Ransome 5, Duncan Woodward 5, Chirs Peacock 3, Gary
Thompson 2, Tim Sayers 2, Ross White 1 and Jamie Tomlinson 1.
